Alrighty Bug Fables peoples, first impressions under the cut!

I've only finished Chapter 1 so I'm aware I'm not very far at all 😅 but it's so charming!!

I've never played a Paper Mario game before (I was gifted Origami King but... that doesn't count in my eyes and i can't stand the combat in that game >^<;;;) but I've always wanted to play Thousand Year Door, so this scratches that itch in how the gameplay works very well!

I'm very bad at the controls because my brain is combining every other game's controls all at once any time I go to press a button ;w; I do not know why but I'll get the hang of it eventually! (I keep pressing X to jump or X to open the menu... only thing I've played semi recently is Tears of the Kingdom so that first part makes sense, but why the second one?? 😅🥲)

It took an embarrassingly long amount of time to understand Kabbu's attack and why I was messing that up 😂😅 like I'm familiar with it from seeing Mario playthroughs, but I now realize the millisecond that last light flashs you let go

Characters are very fun so far! Something about Lief saying "we" and referring to themself that way is very pleasing to me; probably because I do the same just in my own head XD

Vi is a tad annoying but absolutely adorable <3 I'm sure she'll grow on me as I go! Also I absolutely love the sound her beemerang makes when it hits things in the overworld! 👏🏻

Kabbu is my fav right after Lief so far! Just like his character and the way he talks and acts!

I suppose I don't have a ton to say in terms of story; I'm aware Lief has something going on later on yet, hence the "we". But otherwise I'm excited to see more! Loving this game so far! 🙌🏻

she would be like "adventure time" and travel thousands of blocks out for no reason. and shed invite people all the time like "adventure?"

once i accepted my friends invite to adventure and i ended up accidentally being in 3 vcs at once so i was minecraft catatonic for most of the travel, in which he dragged me around in a boat. by the time i escaped my mind hell he was gone and i was in the middle of fucking nowhere

leif would go fucking nuts on the redstone. i think he would be decent at building as well. but hed be a Fucking Nerd about redstone

kabbu i think would like caving. he would have a humble house but hed easily be the richest person on the server. he probably has a dedicated side house for his horse

danspectorboy: Kabbu likes grinding for items and may have crashed their server by sheer quantities of animals. Leif likes to explore and probably doesn't know how crafting works. Vi tries to build farms and none of them work . Probably turns creative mod on and pretends to have gotten the items legitimately. NONE of them know how to build so they live on a dug out cave with like. Three beds by the entrance and a two by one tunnel that runs in front of incredibly disorganised chests and kabbus mine entrance (he digs straight down)

This is actually the last line in a chapter for an og story in which a poor guy goes on vacation with his friends only to wake up one morning on the beach transformed into a siren! Of course, he has no memory of how he got there!

it's a perfectly-closed story that ended on a high note with a wonderfully developed world with a lot of both implied and explicit lore that leaves just enough up to open-ended theory and interpretation for it to be eternally interesting without the need to elaborate on the north or mothiva/zasp's relationship or the roach scientists or venus's immortality or whatever no matter how nice having "canon" closure on these factors would be. they aren't, like, plot holes or anything so adding more context and Giving the reader an answer would inevitably disappoint because the rich wealth of implications Already There allows the player to make assumptions infinitely more varied & interesting than what Bug Fables 2 might provide re: these ambiguities

my beautiful take is that bug fables does not need a sequel

Bug Fables.

It's my current favorite video game, and actually, you can thank it for Linden Roots existing~

I'll explain, but in order to do so I have to dive into spoilers for one of my absolute favorite plots for one of my absolute favorite characters, so I need to slap on a;

MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING!

In my opinion, this game is best experienced SPOILER FREE, so if you haven't played it and want to some day, I recommend skipping my info dump below. (This info can be acquired before beating the main game though. :>)

You're okay with spoilers? Yes? Okay, carry on.

So.

Those who are familiar with Leif's story will probably see how Bug Fables influenced the creation of Linden Roots.

A long while ago, I mentioned Randy being inspired by my favorite fictional character.

That's Leif.

Leif is a moth who is ancient.

And dead.

Loooooong before the game takes place (I can't find an exact timeframe; it's like a generation or two), Leif went with a team of bugs to explore a cave, but ended up dying in there. In that same cave, a group of scientists later experimented on cordyceps. Now, as soon as they became relevant to the story I was HOOKED.

I learned about cordyceps as a kid, and they scared the crap out of me. But it also was one of those morbidly fascinating things I'd look into once in a while. (Before anyone tells me, yes, I know that's what's in The Last of Us.)

If you don't know, IRL cordyceps basically turn bugs into zombies.

Anyway, the scientists were trying to find a way to create eternal life (what else is new lol), and did this through cordyceps. Which, as one could guess when dealing with zombie fungus, ended up going badly for the scientists.

One of the "failed" experimental fungi was thrown out, and found its way to the deceased Leif, and brought him back to life. It took on his memories, and Leif woke up without knowing what happened, until you dig into his story during the game. So the "Leif" we know in the game isn't truly Leif, but is the fungus living as him.

Now... I'm sure that sounds a bit familiar...

This idea of a character being dead-but-not struck a chord with me. It fascinated me to no end.

But there's more to it.

As one might expect, Leif has some tragedy surrounding him.

While playing the game, you can stumble upon his decedents.

This here is Muze. With a 'z'

This is Leif's great great however-many-greats grand-daughter, who you meet in the game's present day.

When he was alive, he had a wife.

His wife was Muse. With an 's'.

We never get to see what Muse looked like, but he says in-game that Muze is a spitting image of her. Hence why Akoya is dressed as she is in my pic. She's dressed as Muse.

Now, according to the developers, Muse was pregnant when Leif went into the cave where he died.

And he didn't know.

There are several moments in the game that show Leif's potential as a father, but one in particular stood out to me.

(Note for the images; Leif refers to himself as "We/Us".)

Oops, I forgot one. Vi finishes by shouting "I said it's not happening!"

The text in the last shot bounces/wiggles in-game, indicating playfulness or joking.

If you're familiar with Goombario and Goombella in the Paper Mario games, this dialogue is this game's version of that. You can have the main characters give flavor text on any area and most characters in the game. (And I recommend doing it often, as it adds SOOO much to the game! ^v^)

This bit takes place in the first room after Kabbu and Vi meet Leif. And at the end of the room, an event happens to change what's said for the rest of the game. Meaning, the only time you see it is RIGHT after they meet; He was getting playful with these two bugs he'd met only moments ago.

I'm sure it can just be seen as sarcasm, but having found this dialogue after learning about Leif missing out on raising a child, I saw it as a clue that he would've been a great dad. And it shattered me. ;w;

Randy and Akoya are wish-fulfillment. They're my version of Leif and Muse. They're my way of giving Leif and Muse what I'm sad they missed out on, while also keeping some of the angst, lol. Thankfully, they've evolved into their own separate characters that I feel I can be proud of, but Leif's story and tragedy still has a deep, well-protected place in my heart.

I love this pattern so much! Bug Fables is probably my favorite game I played in 2020, and Leif is just a fabulous character. (If you enjoyed Thousand Year Door, PLEASE go play Bug Fables, it’s MADE FOR YOU)

size 4 yarn, size D (3.125 mm) hook. I didn’t measure him, but you can see my hand for scale in some of the photos.

this was my first time using proper crafting wire to make an amigurumi posable! The instructions said you can also put wire in the wings and the antennae but I couldn’t figure out how to do that, so I just put it in the arms and legs. Still works okay, I think! (I’ve used pipe cleaners and scrap wire and stuff before but I’ve never used proper wire before.)

I do not have one, but @tatos-stick-pile has been playing with it (and i really love her take on it so far...)

We're thinking that its gonna use the Cave of Trials, a location in Bug Fables which allows you do a shit ton of battles back to back. In universe this uses a Roach hologram who takes the spy data (which is stored in the explorer's permit) and uses it to make the fights).

Anyway they were a little stupid and since hologram tech isn't really out to public (mostly because holograms can interact with physical stuff so it can be potentially dangerous), they figured "hey to watch this on a cool big screen we could try the Cave of Trials" and yeah it took the video tape as corrupted spy data UIERWGFUIWEF
